Let’s look at some of the audio terminologies you’ll encounter while EQ-ing with a digital equalizer: 1. The numerous sliders with labels do different controls to varying elements of sounds, and there are technical terms you’ll need to be familiar with. Tweaking EQ settings is fun, but you won’t get far if you don’t know what is actually happening. Parametric EQ (From PreSonus) What You Should Know About Equalizers: Understanding Common EQ Terms The below is an example of a parametric EQ from Presonus. But the baseline is, they give you the ability to personalize your listening experience and cover the aforementioned audio quality limitations. These built-in equalizers have more control sliders than the fundamental traditional equalizers but can’t match those in advanced studio equipment. And these early equalizers still exist in many consumer electronics and advance more with many knobs and sliders in studio recording equipment and DJ mixers.Įven so, many people are more familiar with digital equalizers available on their laptops, smartphones, and music streaming services like Amazon Music. A good example would be the three-tone knobs present on car stereos and instrument amplifiers for ‘bass,’ ‘mid-range,’ and ‘treble’ control. Old equalizer types are mostly hardware-based, with frequency-dedicated physical knobs for audio manipulation. They work within the human-audible frequencies of between 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, with different equalizer types having varying sound control and accuracy.Īnd as mentioned earlier, an equalizer helps balance frequencies to suit sound quality in different environments, listening methods, and personal preferences. So, consider the quality of your audio system, the type of audio, and the file compression type before sliding the EQ controls to their maximum.ĭigital Equalizer (From Descriptive Audio) What Is An Equalizer?Īn equalizer is an audio processor that allows tweaking of sound frequencies to improve overall quality or decrease/boost specific frequencies’ dominance. However, the EQ will only boost an already good audio system’s performance and can worsen the sound quality of a flawed playback system. In most cases, several EQ tweaks will turn okay sound quality to excellent sound for most audio systems worth their salt. Therefore, even the best home theatre systems or In-Ear-Monitors (IEMs) need the help of an equalizer to smoothen the hardware quirks. While some audio systems sound better than others do, there is nothing perfect for all audio types. Music sounds as good as the interpretation of the sound signal by the playback system. To Cover Up The Limitations Of Different Playback Systems Also, you can attenuate the imperfect frequencies or tone down high frequencies that cause rapid ear fatigue. That way, you won’t miss a word as the vocals become louder. For instance, when listening to a podcast, you can boost the frequency of lyrics to be dominant over other frequencies. You can tweak sound frequencies to focus on specific instruments, vocals, or elements of a song. Thus, the sound engineer will optimize music within the human-audible frequencies, but equalizers help boost or cut the frequencies according to your liking.Ī good EQ gives you broader control over basic bass or treble tuning. Therefore, everyone hears sound differently with changing loudness preferences and expectations. But how much you can actually hear in between that frequency range varies with age, environment, and your ear physiology. The human ear can hear sounds within frequencies of 20Hz to 20 kHz. But why do equalizers exist? And why do you need to EQ your music if the professional engineers have already done it? Well, equalizers exist to give you the option to customize sounds for two main reasons: 1. For the older generation, the tiny little sliders that existed on Zeppelin record players may ring a bell, but EQ is now all-digital in modern devices such as smartphones and laptops. Best Equalizer Settings for Podcasts and AudiobooksĮqualizers have been around for a long time.

However, there still remain a number of countries that primarily use the mile instead of the kilometer including the United States and the United Kingdom (UK). This definition is subject to change, but the relationship between the meter and the kilometer will remain constant.Ĭurrent use: It is currently the official unit of measurement for expressing distances between geographical places on land in most of the world. The origin of the kilometer is linked to that of the meter, and its current definition as the distance traveled by light in 1/299 792 458 second. One kilometer is therefore one thousand meters. Kilometerĭefinition: A kilometer (symbol: km) is a unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). There also exist a number of units based on, or closely related to, the Roman mile, including the nautical mile (1.852 km exactly), Italian mile (~1.852 km), and the Chinese mile (500m exactly).Ĭurrent use: Although most countries have adopted the metric system and use kilometers, rather than miles, to express land distance, the mile is still prevalently used in countries such as the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Myanmar, and Liberia, as well as some other countries which are either US or UK territories, or have historical ties with either country. The definition of a mile as 5,280 feet (or 8 furlongs), sometimes referred to as the statute mile, international mile, or land mile, which differs from the Roman mile of 5,000 feet, developed due to the importance of the furlong in England, back in 1593. The use of the abbreviation "m" for mile was common before the widespread adoption of the metric system after the adoption of the metric system, "mi" became the preferred abbreviation in order to avoid confusion between miles and meters. History/origin: The mile is an English unit (predecessor of Imperial units and United States Customary Units) of length. It is currently defined as 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards, or exactly 1,609.344 meters. Definition: A mile (symbol: mi or m) is a unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems of measurement. In determining whether the Minister had misconstrued the words ‘ would cause undue financial hardship to the owner‘ the Court decided there were two ‘yardsticks’ that required a comparative exercise : However, as the Minister had chosen to make a decision pursuant to this section, and had relied upon the basis of ‘undue financial hardship’ as it appears in s32(1)(d) in making the determination, he elevated his obligation and did fall into error. The process of the Minister’s decision enlivened the Court’s power to consider if s32 had been misconstrued. The Court found that the Minister was not required to consider s32(1) of the Act. his interpretation of undue financial hardship to mean “ mere reduction in value or potential profit from the sale of the Sirius Building and possible loss of monies for social housing to the New South Wales Government” was incorrect. he fell under the misapprehension that it was not necessary to consider the heritage significance of Sirius, and.he omitted to consider the particular financial circumstances of the owner of Sirius in considering ‘undue financial hardship’,.The Applicant submitted that the Minister was required to consider the factors in s32(1), and had misconstrued the section in three ways : (d) whether the listing would cause undue financial hardship to the owner, mortgagee or lessee of the item or the land on which the item is situated.’ (c) whether the listing would render the item incapable of reasonable or economic use, (b) whether the long-term conservation of the item is necessary, (a) the recommendation of the Heritage Council that the item should be listed ‘(1) The Minister may direct the listing on the State Heritage Register of a place, building, work, relic, moveable object or precinct that the Minister considers is of State heritage significance, but only if the Heritage Council has recommended that the item be listed and the Minister has considered the following: Millers Point Community Association Incorporated’s (‘ Applicant‘) primary challenge to the Minister’s decision was that he had misconstrued section 32(1)(d) of the Act, thus he ‘ constructively failed to exercise jurisdiction‘. ‘ whatever the heritage significance of the Building, even at its highest (including even if it reached a threshold for State heritage significance), this is outweighed by the undue financial hardship its listing would cause to its owners, by diminishing what would otherwise be its sale value (possibly by in the order of $70 million), which would potentially represent foregone funds for additional social housing.‘ One reason for the Minister’s decision was that: On 30 July 2016 the Minister determined not to direct that Sirius be listed on the Register. On 19 March 2014 the NSW Government announced its intention to sell Sirius and reinvest the sale proceeds into social housing. Until recently Sirius has been used for social housing. Sirius was built in the 1980s and is a recognised example of Brutalist architecture. Property NSW own the land and building, with the New South Wales Land and Housing Corporation the lessee and manager. The Heritage Council was satisfied that the building’s aesthetic value and rarity warranted its listing. On 14 March 2016 the Heritage Council of New South Wales (‘ Heritage Council‘) made a recommendation to the Minister that Sirius be listed on the Register. The Court found that the Minister made an error of law in deciding that listing Sirius on the Register ‘ would cause undue financial hardship to the owner‘, and that he had not discharged the duty required of him by the Act. The Court considered the decision of the Minister for Heritage (‘ Minister‘) to not direct that the Sirius Apartment Building (‘ Sirius‘) be listed on the State Heritage Register (‘ Register‘).
